“Learn as I play, and play as I learn” –

In 2015 Yokky Wong participated in a wood kiln building and firing course in Kecskemet, Hungary. The mentor, Fred Olsen, is the author of an authoritative kiln building book “The Kiln Book”.

Kecskemet Contemporary Art Studios holds a large collections of works from ceramic masters. Whilst looking at the masters’ works, I thought, ‘If so many things have been done before, then it must be near impossible to be truly innovative and creative?’ The so-called creativity doesn’t come out of thin air, but is derived from past experiences. So, I put some slabs onto the the sculptures scattered throughout the garden, living room and corridors, directly “copying” down their contours.

Obviously, it wasn‘t just done randomly. I chose which part of the sculptures to “copy” and then which part of the “copies” to glaze. The “copies” are the negatives to the originals’ positive, but through thoughts and decisions, they are now also new works on their own. I think this idea is worth some thoughts and discussions.
