The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Hong Kong together with PMQ and with support of The Krakow International Cultural Centre presents “Nativity Scene – Szopka Tradition in Kraków” exhibition for the first time in Hong Kong. The exhibition showcases selected award winning Nativity Scenes created by famous Polish artists together with an exhibition “The Treasures of Kraków”.

The tradition of Krakow Nativity Scenes has been alive in Krakow for over a hundred years, and the Nativity Scene Contest is held there every year. This year, the 80th competition will be organized in December. Creators of Nativity Scenes are presenting their works at the monument of Adam Mickiewicz on the Main Square in Krakow. The sound of St. Mary’s Church bugle call begins a colourful procession to the Museum of Krakow, where the jury selects the most beautiful Nativity Scenes. The tradition of making Krakow Nativity Scenes was entered in 2018 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This cultural phenomenon is shown in exhibitions around the world. Those stunning works already visited Spain, France, Germany, Lithuania, Belarus, Japan and Canada, and today they are exhibited in Hong Kong. The Krakow Nativity Scenes presented at the exhibition come from the collection of the Museum of Krakow, the work of Filip Fotomajczyk and other private collections. At the Krakow Nativity Scene exhibition those unusual handicrafts can be seen from December 13, 2022 to December 29, 2022.

Nativity Scene-Making Workshops “Krakow – Hong Kong Nativity Scene”
As part of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the tradition of Kraków nativity scenes. After a short presentation on the historical circumstances and the rules of the Krakow Nativity Scenes Competition, the theoretical part will be moved to the practical part. During its duration, each and everyone, following detailed instructions by the teacher, will be able to make one element of the Krakow nativity scene. The result of all the parts made during the workshop will be an entire Krakow nativity scene.
