Ciao! This month’s “Foreign Taste” is bringing you a story about a Hongkonger in Italy, as well as tastes of some truly authentic Italian home-cooked dishes!

In this session of “Foreign Taste”, PMQ Taste Library is glad to have Sharon, who was born and raised in Hong Kong, to share her life in Mondovì, a town in Piedmont, northern Italy. She met her Italian husband in 2003 when studying at a film school in Beijing. The encounter eventually led to romance. They got married 5 years later and welcomed their first child in 2010. Sharon temporarily moved back to Hong Kong with the baby for a better living environment, while her husband had to stay in Beijing for his job there. Desperate to unite again especially after their second child was born, the couple made a big decision: They would settle in Italy and begin their family life in a Italian small town.

Days in Mondovì were not easy for Sharon at first. She was the only Hongkonger living in the area and did not know anyone there except for her husband and his family. From time to time she would feel homesick whenever the taste of delicious dim sum came to mind. However, Sharon soon adapted to the life in Mondovì as she made some friends there. Life in the small town also allowed her to explore the Italian food culture. She found out that Italian food and Chinese food had a lot in common. Both cuisines feature dishes alike : Jiaozi (Chinese dumplings) and ravioli / tortellini, noodles and pasta. These similarities in food became the magic cures of homesick.

Apart from telling her own stories, Sharon will turn the kitchen of PMQ Taste Library into her Italian home kitchen. Participants will get the chance to taste a few dishes prepared by Sharon herself, including vitello tonnato (sliced veal meat with tuna sauce), bagna cauda, and tagliatelle al sugo di funghi (homemade pasta with mushroom sauce). If you are keen on Italian food or interested in Sharon’s story in Mondovì, do not miss this month’s “Foreign Taste”!
