Gallery Tete will host the second solo exhibition of ceramic artist, Rimpei Watanabe, on March 7, following the exhibition in 2024.
In his first solo show, he created tea cups and tea tools for the first time. His first visit to Hong Kong left a deep impression on him, experiencing the city’s vibrancy and the moments of daily tea drinking and tea ceremonies. These experiences continue to influence his creations.
A year and a half later, he will showcase his feelings in this second exhibition, focusing on tea pots and pouring vessels, presenting a series of works that delve deeper into the theme of “earth” in tea tools.
The charm of Mr. Watanabe’s works lies primarily in the presence of the clay. The thick and rounded shapes exhibit subtle variations formed by the hand’s trace. Each piece reveals a unique character during the firing process, showcasing a strong individuality.
This weight is not just a matter of volume. Instead, it encompasses the sense of reassurance when you hold it, the transfer of heat when pouring, and the changes in luster and color throughout the use—objects that allow you to feel time standing still.
The belief in the earth, the surrender to the firing process, and the avoidance of excessive uniformity exude a different kind of beauty in their simplicity. This exhibition not only relates to Japan but also connects with Hong Kong’s culture. Each piece, rich in expression and varying in form, invites everyone to visit and personally experience their weight and warmth.
Everyone can also appreciate the works from the perspective of daily life.
