Over 500 years ago, the German inventor Johannes Gutenberg (1397–1468) created movable type using lead alloys, refined the ingredient of oil painting for printing ink, and drew inspiration from the spiral presses used in winemaking to invent the wooden printing press. This standardized and industrialized movable type printing method fundamentally transformed the way knowledge was disseminated in Europe, bringing about monumental changes in human history.
Today, while movable type printing is recognised as an intangible cultural heritage, you can still become one of Gutenberg’s apprentices at Open Press! In this beginner workshop, participants will learn the basics of letterpress printing, including the structure of movable type, type case arrangement, and typesetting techniques. You will use an Adana Letterpress Printing Machine to print your own works, exploring the artistic possibilities of this traditional craftsmanship. If you have a passion for paper products and want to acquire typesetting techniques—Don’t miss out!!
