Like a combination of fragmented tableaus, “Waiting for the Polar Express” features a collection of experimental works by Hong Kong young artist HUI Sze-lok Serene, examining the mentality between residing in distant places. In the exhibition, precisely thought-out conceptual and minimalistic works are arranged with the intention to create a spatial absurdity and delusion.

In this particular setting, the analogue of a window is extensively used, where a window frame conveys a strong representation of a ‘room’, exemplifying the idea of two separated spaces. She utilized numerous mirrors and images that represent the past encounters during her life in the Nordic countries. The conflict between a reflection of the reality and images captured from a distant world creates a virtual space within the room, and the distortion represents a state of unconsciousness and recurring mode of being distracted by memories from the present.

The entire atmosphere encourages one to blind the present and be drawn into a world of another experience of being ‘elsewhere’, either memory or imagination.
