From June 26, the solo exhibition by ceramic artist Tatsuma Segawa will be held at Gallery tete. This will be his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.

Tatsuma Segawa was born in 1988 in Kanagawa Prefecture. He currently maintains a studio in Tokyo—Senju.

In recent years, his works have featured materials that are not considered mainstream in the history of ceramics—metals such as aluminum, silver, iron, and copper. Using a distinctive approach, he applies color to the surface of the ceramic body through these metal-based pigments. Through experimental creations based on these metal pigments, his practice has continued to develop through the ongoing planning and accumulation of exhibitions, gradually forming a diverse and richly expressive body of work.

This exhibition will focus on his main series: Silver Sulfide Colored Decoration, Crackled Silver Sulfide Colored Decoration, and Crackled Silver Sulfide Colored Decoration (Blue-Green). These works are created by sintering pure silver onto the surface of ceramic pieces, followed by sulfur treatment, to produce their unique textures and appearances.

In addition, the exhibition will also present works themed around Shiro-Gai (white glaze). By incorporating smoke into the kiln atmosphere during firing, a variety of carbonized expressions can be rendered realistically. There is also his newest series, Porcelain White” (Shiroji), in which patterns that resemble white wrinkles emerge within an immaculate white ground. The works include several pieces created based on Ding ware (定窯, Teiyō)—a representative white porcelain of the Song dynasty.

Through the interplay of earth and metal, Tatsuma Segawa creates between theory and intuition. We warmly invite you to come and experience his work.
