PMQ Seed – To Open Minds 2023: KIDS CONNECT

In today’s ever-changing world, we want to encourage kids to venture beyond the digital realm and their own classrooms, and to engage with the community in ways unique to childhood. To paraphrase renowned Italian educator Loris Malaguzzi, a child has three teachers: his/her elders, the environment, and the peers he/she grows up with. Through the process of group play, kids are able to learn social skills such as empathy and collaboration, which are essential to the practice of creativity.

This year’s PMQ Seed carries the theme “Kids connect”—our goal is to stimulate the innate originality and imagination available to all little ones, and tap into the power of connection amongst peers. We hope to help kids build a sense of belonging in the community through exchanging ideas, diving deep into autonomous explorations, and working together on experimental projects. We know these extraordinary experiences will play a major part in kids’ development of foundational skills in tomorrow’s world.

With the support of Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the project’s lead sponsor, as well as an amazing team of creative partners, we are thrilled to announce that we will continue to host our six key programmes this year surrounding the themes on empathy and design thinking: “Summer Camp”, “School Outreach”, “Mini-camp”, “Creative Festival”, “Train the Trainer Workshop”, and “Seed Online”. Designed for kids aged 6-12, parents, and educators, the programmes will deliver a series of hands-on creative challenges that aim to supercharge kids’ creative powers.

This year’s “Creative Festival” is themed “Kids Connect: Power Up”, co-curated by PMQ Seed and LittleUrbanMountain Design Limited. The curatorial team converted the PMQ courtyard into four themed experiential spaces, known as “Power Stations” each with a specific theme: Health, Happiness, Friendship, and Eco. The festival invited children between the ages of 6 and 12 to participate as “Power Buddies” and suggest activities or design experience related to the four Power Stations. The selected participants will oversee the Power Stations during the festival period, interact with their peers and the public and establish a connection of positive energy transmission. This summer, let’s experience the power of children and see how they unleash their creativity, connect with peers and the community. Let’s POWER UP!

    About PMQ Seed
Creativity is a seed—it holds the power to transform and move the world.

In our ever-growing society, with technology changing our lives by the day, creative and human-centered thinking will become increasingly important. We believe that planting the creative seed in the minds of children will contribute significantly towards their cultivation of character and creative thought, as well as growth and development in future society.

Since 2018, PMQ Seed has been collaborating with various local creative and educational organisations to design a series of cross-disciplinary and immersive educational activities, workshops, and exhibitions, with the aim of cultivating design thinking among school children. It is our goal to enrich children’s growth with creative design skills. Furthermore, through the application of human-centered thinking, we hope to learn from our new generation’s perspectives as we reflect on the present and unlock the future.
