As a philosophy of minimalist living, the concept of “decluttering” has encouraged people to reassess their relationship with their belongings, and to cultivate a new practice and attitude toward the aesthetics of living spaces.

While many tend to simplistically view “decluttering” as merely “organizing” or “discarding items,” PMQ Taste Library curator and the writer Craig Au Yeung decided to document 66 objects that have accompanied him throughout his life. This process allowed him to reflect deeply on the concept of “decluttering”, and engage in profound self-inquiry. The meticulous exploration reveals not only the complex entanglements between individuals and their possessions, but also brings forth nearly forgotten memories and emotions, echoing voices and past flavours.

“Letting it be” proposes three gestures: “not discontinuing”, observing how objects transform across time, connecting past, present, and future; “not letting go”, exploring our emotional and functional bonds to objects, seeking sustainability through restoration; and “not separating”, using craftsmanship and technology to archive and preserve what surrounds us.

As these narratives came together to form the book “Let It Be: Threads of Memory”, Craig was inspired to invite his friends to contribute objects they find impossible to part with for an exhibition. In this setting, they will share the intimate stories behind these cherished items.

The highest state of being lies in holding on and letting go with grace. “Letting it be” embodies a shared regeneration between people and objects. Under the guardianship of The God of Small Things, everything reveals its worth. How rare to live so sincerely—and how deeply we feel the weight of memory.
