“I hate myself!”
Have you ever experienced such a feeling?
Every one of us is complicated and unique, as each of us has more than one “self”: an emotional one, a rational one, a relationship-oriented one, a distanced one… we developed multiple layers of “self” in the process of growing up. Nonetheless, we have learnt to “disguise” ourselves to conform to perceived social norms. Eventually, we learn to hide different aspects of ourselves and our emotions. This act of concealment ultimately compromises our ability to manage emotions and form connections with others.
Through the “LAYERS” Exhibition, the 6PM Cyber Youth Support Team of St. James’ Settlement presents a collection of “self-portraits” depicting young people. Each “self-portrait” consists of three layers of paintings, representing different aspects of themselves. The audience has the opportunity to catch a glimpse into the young people’s inner selves. The audience might be more conscious of their own thoughts and feelings and discover a deeper sense of themselves in the exhibition.
The exhibition also features a self-exploration workshop. With guided questions, participants can create small crafts that represent their current emotions. This process of “externalization” allows abstract emotions to become tangible objects that can be physically interacted with. You can name and engage in dialogue with your emotions, lift them up, and let them go.
Let us explore ourselves together, reconnect with our inner emotional world, and learn how to navigate our emotions.
