Material in Time is a platform that explores both traditional materials used in Japanese arts and crafts as well as new materials creation through continuous research and development of design.

Every year, Material in Time highlights superior Japanese materials co-developed by designers and creators. The focus of 2018 is “paper” – a material that we are all familiar with. Material in Time will take a fresh look into this timeless material, explore how paper has evolved over time, its continuous connection to our everyday lives, and also the role of design played in the evolution.

In September this year, there will be a design talk held alongside with an exhibition at PMQ to foster dialogues between Japan and Hong Kong. Together with Stickyline, a Hong Kong-based design studio, exhibitors from Japan will introduce the potential of paper, exchange ideas about how designers can develop innovative products by combining tradition and technology through design, and share the experience of how they get inspired by individual local cultures.
