Gallery tete will hold the first Hong Kong solo exhibition of ceramic artist Haruyuki Matsumoto starting January 9 at PMQ in Hong Kong. Born in 1983, Matsumoto established his studio in the water- and soil-rich region of Shiga, where he continues to create, adapting to the changes in nature.
His works are characterized by an unexpectedly “thin” and “light” quality. The vessels made from minimally impure porcelain clay have a bold and rugged appearance, yet they feel surprisingly delicate in hand.
The artist himself cannot fully grasp the various expressions that will emerge during the firing process. Instead of pursuing decorative beauty, he focuses on embracing the randomness and uncontrollable forces brought by natural materials such as earth, fire, and ash, and strives to present these traces in their raw form—a consistent attitude reflected in his work.
This exhibition will feature white porcelain pieces transformed by the unique processes of wood firing, along with matte black porcelain works with ash glazing. It includes everyday vessels such as pouring vessels, flat cups, straight-sided cups, and plates, alongside highly sculptural art pieces.
Through this exhibition, we hope everyone can personally appreciate the aesthetics of ceramic artist Haruyuki Matsumoto, which embody sharpness and passion.
