30, 31 May (1:30pm) 2D Minuscule – Valley Of The Lost Ants
Director : Hélène Giraud, Thomas Szabo
Duration : 88 mins
Category : I
Language : No dialogue (no subtitles)
Adapted from the hugely popular television series, the first MINUSCULE feature film is an eye-popping, action-packed adventure about the thousands of creepy crawlies living right under our noses, and the newfound friendship between an ant and a ladybird. When an army of black ants discovers a tin of sugar cubes left by some careless human picnickers, they embark on the treacherous challenge of bringing it back to their colony, unaware of the young ladybird cowering within, and the army of rival red ants in hot pursuit. Beautifully combining real photography of the picturesque French countryside with a 3D animated insect cast, MINUSCULE brilliantly bridges the divide between fantasy and reality. While the setting is reminiscent of recent Hollywood hits like TURBO, ANTZ and A BUG’S LIFE, MINUSCULE succeeds in telling its story of friendship and adventure without uttering a single word.
30 May (4:00pm) Chicken with Plums
Director : Vincent Paronnaud, Maria de Medeiros
Cast : Mathieu Amalric, Golshifteh Farahani, Maria de Medeiros
Duration : 94 mins
Category : IIB
Language : French (Chinese & English Subtitles)
CHICKEN WITH PLUMS is the story of a famous musician whose prized instrument has been ruined. Unable to replace his violin, he decides to die, and eight days later, he renders his soul. Yet what seems like the end is really just the beginning. Under its romantic allure, this film is conceived as a thriller with flashbacks and flash forwards which shed light on Nasser’s personality and the reasons for his despair. Death is used as a springboard to talk about life.
31 May (4:00pm) Is The Man Who Is Tall Happy?
Director: Michel Gondry
Duration: 88 mins
Language : English (Chinese subtitles)
Through a kaleidoscope of imagery and visual ideas, French filmmaker Michel Gondry (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND) illustrates a series of far-reaching conversations with celebrated philosopher and political activist, Noam Chomsky. Animating his interviews, Gondry employs a crude, child-like hand drawn style to process, illustrate and explain anecdotes from Chomsky’s childhood and professional career, but most importantly to help himself and the audience visualise and understand a number of theories relating to linguistics and cognitive learning. What might seem challenging or even baffling concepts about how language is mastered and how we perceive the world around us, are simplified through Chomsky’s explanations and Gondry’s images. Gondry willingly adopts the role of student – and interpreter – and the result is a playfully inventive animated documentary that presents its intellectually weighty subject manner in a witty, surreal and entertaining manner we can all enjoy.
