This exhibition is part of the Dutch Days in Hong Kong, an annual festival in celebration of Dutch culture and innovation. The theme of the 2019 edition of the Dutch Days is “Rembrandt as Innovator”, coinciding with the official Rembrandt Year in the Netherlands. Three young Hong Kong artists Jess Lau Ching Wa, Siu Wai Hang and Tung Wing Hong have created new media artworks in relation to the Dutch master.

Rembrandt van Rijn, better known as Rembrandt, was born in 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands. As soon as he moved to Amsterdam in his mid-twenties, his popularity arose. The painter became known for both painted portraits of wealthy Amsterdam citizens as well as his etched (self-) portraits. Nowadays, Rembrandt is especially praised for his innovative use of light and dark. His most famous painting, The Night Watch, is a great example of this masterly technique and keeps inspiring contemporary artists around the world.

The exhibition, curated by Eric Leung, highlights new artworks that are inspired by the Dutch master painter. The exhibition represents a crossover between the latest contemporary art and Dutch Golden Age painting; emerging artists and the old master; Western and Eastern culture. The three Hong Kong artists created cutting edge new media artworks including videos and kinetic installations to reveal the historical value of the great artist.
