This is a Hong Kong based studio for Architecture, Interior Design and Photography.
An “image” is an impression; it is a physical and/or psychological experience, and it can be visceral and emotional. It tells stories and preserves memories.
Our mission is to make images with an impact and craft the space in which powerful images are made.
Studio UNIT was founded by Vivien Liu. She has been practicing architecture for over 8 years in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and China. Prior to founding Studio UNIT, Vivien worked as an architect at Rem Koolhaas’ OMA and Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF).
Four years ago Vivien discovered a passion in photographing the urban density and architecture of Hong Kong and around the world. Her photography on Instagram has attracted more than 220,000 followers who check in to see her unique view on Hong Kong everyday.
The cafe is located in Sai Ying Pun, an upbeat neighborhood in Hong Kong. A classic Hong Kong dairy brand is used as the theme for the restaurant. The brand, originating from the 1950s, is a local icon and a fond childhood memory for Hong Kongers.
Inspiration for the design came from Hong Kong’s ‘Bing Sutts’ (冰室), which are traditional cafes that were prominent in the 50s and 60s. They are unmistakable products of Hong Kong’s past, where Western menus have been localized and made affordable, fast and delicious.
The goal was to bring a modern touch to the local dairy brand while maintaining its established classic and iconic image. This goes hand in hand with giving the ‘Bing Sutt’ a contemporary definition.
