Artist Statement

Life experience, however grim or outrageous, often leads to great art. And in our marketing-obsessed world, an artist’s life story can be just as important to his success as his talent. British pop artist Tricky Gee has plenty of both.

Born in 1973, Tricky graduated from the Wimbledon College of Art with 1st class honours degree in Fine Art Print & Digital Media in 2009.

Tricky is a Mexico City based artist whose practice amalgamates print techniques, painting, photography, collage, sculpture and installation. These multi-layered works are saturated with social commentary and self-examination. From smuggling to incarceration, urban cityscapes to a narco cemetery and shrines. Actions and their consequences are played out in a variety of narratives, which draw attention to facets of society that are taboo. He has exhibited in London, Bristol, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Riviera Nayarit and Hong Kong.

Major influences are Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg, Christian Boltanski, Banksy, Marcus Jansen and Ed & Nancy Kienholtz.
