Rural Urban Framework: Building a Collective Identity

What does it mean to be part of a community?

How can we work together for positive change?

How can we collaborate and work with others less fortunate than ourselves?

How can design contribute towards building a collective identity?

Two teams of students from Hong Kong travelled to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Fujian, China to engage these questions through the Jockey Club HKU Rural-Urban Design Project. At each location students engaged local people and worked directly with local contractors to build new structures that were designed to enable community events and interaction. Each project is an experiment with limited resources and construction techniques and each attempts to trigger a step by step process of community formation.

In Mongolia, residents now have a place for training, reading, playing, district meetings and even gardening in a climate when it reaches -30C during the winter. In Fujian, students took on two abandoned tulous, or traditional mud-walled buildings and inserted new attractor programmes, creating new public activity spaces and kick-starting a process of gradual transformation.
