When we talk about reading, we will inevitably think of the text. In fact, books communicate with readers in different “languages”, be it cover, type, layout, binding, materials, printing… The dialogue begins before we open the book.

Every detail counts towards a holistic reading experience. In this talk, two book designers Chan Hei-shing and Mak Kai-hang will share insights on “The Way a Book Speaks”:

Hei Shing will talk about “the body of the book” in terms of structure, materials and layout;
Mak will speak about typography, layout, bunkobon (pocket-sized paperbacks in Japan), letterpress printing, and also his works.

As we are talking about paper books, of course we have to hold them in our hands to feel them. The two designers will bring their collection of books to the event. We hope you will join us and bring along yours so that we can enjoy a variety of book designs from each other.

Free admission on a first-come, first-served basis.
